CSB
Concrete Step Barrier or CSB is fully compliant with EN1317 and provides the following performance levels:-
·         Containment / Working Width – N2 / W1 and H2 / W2 performance
·         ASI Class – B
CSB is the core product within the Britpave portfolio of barrier systems.
It is constructed upon a simple foundation comprising 150mm of compacted granular sub base and 100mm of bound tarmac or concrete surface course. The barrier is wholly surface mounted with no need for embedment or restraint.
The barrier is compatible with many drainage systems including: open water channels, gulley grates and slot drain. Weep holes can also be provided where cross drainage through the barrier is required.
Under bridges and over bridges as well as traffic signs and Emergency Crossing Points (ECPs) can be easily incorporated with design and construction included within both the Britpave drawings and data sheets as well as Extrudakerb’s range of construction services.
The barrier is primarily constructed by the slipform technique (click for link to Barrier Construction Techniques) with high productivity, exacting quality control and low cost being but some of the advantages of this mechanised operation.
Bifurcation, transition and termination are all catered for within the Britpave drawings and data sheets. These items are typically constructed using conventional fixed form work.

Wide Concrete Step Barrier or WCSB is fully compliant with EN1317 and provides the following performance levels:-
·         Containment / Working Width – N2 / W3 and H2 / W3 performance
·         ASI Class – B
The widened profile is a development of the standard CSB profile for use in the central reserve where street lighting is required.
Uniquely WCSB provides not only a barrier system fully compliant with EN1317 but also a tested foundation for street lighting system with columns up to 15m in height.
WCSB includes a longitudinal trough along the centre at the top of the barrier. Ducts are laid within this trough to carry cabling for the street lighting system. The trough is ultimately filled with concrete to provide an integral but fully maintainable ducted system.
Light columns are fastened to the barrier using post drilled, chemically fixed stainless steel anchors and fixings. This tested system can accommodate all types of columns, luminaries and signs. Design load values for fixings in use with a WCSB foundation are available upon request.
Foundation, construction techniques and ancillary products are similar to CSB.

Variable Concrete Step Barrier or VCSB and Variable Wide Concrete Step Barrier (VWCSB) are fully compliant with EN1317 and provides the following performance levels:-
·         Containment / Working Width – VCSB, N2 / W1 and H2 / W2 performance
·         Containment / Working Width VWCSB, N2 / W3 and H2 / W3 performance
·         ASI Class – B
The variable profile is a development of the standard fixed profile barriers for use in the central reserve where adjacent carriageways are constructed at different levels.
Variable profile barrier overcomes the need to provide twin lengths of barrier one servicing each carriageway as is the case with any other safety restraint system.
Uniquely the sides of Britpave variable profile concrete barrier are aligned to suit the road surface level of each carriageway so that the relationship between the step profile and the road is maintained.
Britpave variable profile barrier can accommodate an adjacent carriageway level difference of up to 300mm; above this twin barriers must be used.
Britpave variable profile barrier is available in both CSB and WCSB in the event that street lighting is required along the central reserve
Extrudakerb are experts in the field of designing and constructing variable profile concrete barrier and operate the large 4-track paving machines that are required to carry the heavy, complex variable barrier moulds.
Extrudakerb are the only slipform paving contractor in the world that design and fabricate its own variable profile paving moulds. This allows all the lessons learnt on the construction site to be incorporated in new and unique future mould design.

Extrudakerb provide a vast range of experience, a renowned team of professional staff and the very latest equipment required to provide compliant Britpave concrete barrier constructed by both slipform and fixed form processes.

A range of transitions and terminals are provided within the Extrudakerb / Britpave suite of drawings and are featured within the associated data sheets.

Transitions are available from concrete to steel Step Barrier providing solutions for expansion joints, and emergency crossing points.

Transitions are available to some N2 containment steel systems.

Terminals are available and these allow CSB to adjoin structures and crash cushions.

All transitions and terminals are constructed using bespoke steel formwork designed and manufactured by our own fabrication division. Formwork gangs are employed directly in house and constitute a vital part of the complete service offered by us.

Careful programming and execution of the formwork elements within a project programme ensure the whole of the works are completed on time.

Interfaces – Bridges and Drainage Systems
Britpave provides the only complete combined steel and concrete safety restraint system portfolio of products.

The suite of drawings, data sheets and complimentary technical reports provide specific design as well as general guidance for the incorporation of both steel and concrete Britpave barrier systems across bridges and accommodation of adjacent to drainage systems.

Reports that provide indicative loadings and foundation requirements are available. These compliment the construction designs featured within the Britpave suite of drawings and include expansion joints.
Extrudakerb have constructed both Britpave concrete and steel barrier systems across many bridges and are able to provide expert advice and support to Designers and Principle Contractors.

Data sheets provide clear guidance with respect to acceptable adjacent drainage systems and construction.

In order that the barrier systems perform upon the network in a similar manner to the tested products adjacent construction must be considered.

Britpave systems can be constructed adjacent to kerbs in the case of raised medians, open water channels, gulley grates and slot drains.

Weep holes that allow through barrier drainage without compromise to the tested systems are included within the Britpave documents.

Extrudakerb are able to offer advice in respect of the accommodation of drainage systems and incorporation of weep holes.
